Ideation & Prototyping Week 5

My Life with Things
I really enjoyed reading “My Life With Things” which discussed how “our lives have no meaning without things through which to express who and what we are” (38). I believe that in our society we are somehow taught that everyone needs the latest gadgets. It is really hard for people to resist temptations and refrain from purchasing goods. I think this reading reminds me of Don Norman’s Emotional Design where he says that we all have specific reasons for purchases something and tend to buy things or keep things due to developing an emotional connection with them

I have always been fascinated with Apple products. I remember when my parents got the first iPhone and it was the first time I got to every interact with a touch screen that was so responsive to touch. Prior to that I remember playing around with my parents Blackberry phones which were very popular back in the day. But nothing equated to the look and feel of an Apple iPhone. I used to beg my parents to get me an iPhone but they would say I am a child and children do not need phones. Looking back, I am grateful they made that decision but at the time I was furious. After months and months of badgering my parents for a phone I was not old enough to get and would probably have only 2 contacts (my mom and dad) they settled on getting me an iPod.
With all the gadgets I have acquired throughout my life and lost overtime, somehow I still have the 6th generation iPod. This iPod brings back so many memories to me as it was one of the first ‘big girl gadgets’ I was gifted from my parents. I still remember the process of downloading music onto the iPod. There was no Spotify or Apple Music to make this process a breeze, it was hard work and commitment. I remember writing out an entire playlist on pen and paper and then finding a FREE Mp3 music download website on Safari. Then I had to download each song listening to a few seconds of them to make sure it was a good file. Then I had to upload all these songs on to iTunes in order to download them all on to the iPod. This process was gruesome but so worth it on the end. I felt so cool walking around with my headphones and my iPod and really loved the touch circle, I think it is such a fun and simplistic design. This iPod is a core memory of mine because it was one of the first gadgets I was given. It also is a reminder to me about our technological advancements as Apple and other technology companies have come up with so many innovations since this iPod came out. Now there is simply no need for an iPod as you can listen to music on your phone among many other things. I am interested in seeing what phones and technology devices will look like 125 years from now.to charge your iPod and view the time, I convinced my parents to buy me that the following year. This iPod brought me so much joy as I was able to tune out and listen to songs like “The eye of the tiger,” ”It’s a party in the USA,” and “Teenage Dream”
Eventually I grew out of the iPod, had the iPod nano for a little while and then eventually received by very first iPod touch which I absolutely loved.
With the latest iPhone that came out, you no longer need to place a SIM card inside as it is now done digitally. When looking around my house for objects, I found an old SIM card. I remember when I got my first phone, I had to enter a SIM card and had one that was too big to fit the slot. It was my first time learning that phones had different SIM card sizes just like many devices have different cables. I find it interesting how this little chip gets placed inside your phone to connect you with the world. I find it even more fascinating that technology has advanced to a point where you do not even need a chip to set up your phone number anymore.
A little background about me, I am biracial born from a Pakistani father and Italian American mother. Though I struggled with finding my own identity in my youth as I felt like I could never fit in, I have learned to love and embrace my unique ethnicity. Looking back, my childhood was fascinating as I was brought up into two very different cultures and even lived in Pakistan for from ages 9-13. This plane souvenir was given to me by my great aunt who was born in Sicily, Italy and immigrated to New York at 20 years old. Since most of my Italian family from my moms side have left Italy to come to the United States, I unfortunately have never visited the Italy. My great aunt gave this to me as a symbol to remember my background and visit the city most of my family members from my moms side grew up in.
I found this CD that I used to download Windows (Microsoft Office Suite) manually on the computer. It is fascinating to see how the process of adding Microsoft has changed over the years. Now many schools offer this software for free or you can pay online to download it straight to your device. I do believe that having it on a CD was a more affordable option as you could place it on to as many computers as you would like. It is also interesting to see how since this time, many other companies have came out with typing softwares of their own such as Apple Pages and Google Docs

II have also always been fascinated by pictures and how different they looked over 100 years ago. I am interesting in seeing what the future of photography will look like.

Welcome to my time capsule project where I choose a few items that have meaning to me or that I find fascinating. Ever since my youth, I have always been very curious and observant. When I first learned about the design method “the 5 whys” I laughed to myself because I have been using this to learn about the world for as long as I can remember. As an individual who us fascinated by the advancements of technological devices over the years, this time capsule showcases a few tech items that might seem minuscule or irreverent to some but hold meaning, importance, and memories for me.
Throughout our lives, one thing that has always changed as technology continues to advance are charging cables! I still have many of the cables that I used for different gadgets, all in various shapes and sizes. I wanted to include this in my time capsule because the EU recently has passed a law to have all cables for gadgets be chargeable by a universal USB-C charger to limit the amount of waste we have of cables. I am curious to see what the future of charging will be like 125 years from now. Will everything auto charge with solar power?
